About Mrs. Bunker
Welcome to East Cary Middle School! I'm very excited to be teaching 6th grade Language Arts for my 5th year as part of the East Cary Middle School family. Prior to my arrival at East Cary I taught kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 7th grade. I taught for 2 years in Miamisburg, Ohio, and 14 years in Chicago, Illinois, before continuing my career in Cary. I am originally from New York and grew up in Long Island. In 1981 I received my bachelor's degree in Communications at S.U.N.Y Oswego with a minor in African Studies. After spending 9 years in the travel industry and 4 years as a singer, I attended The McGregor School of Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio and earned my Master's degree in Education in 1996. In 2010, I became a National Board Certified Teacher in Language Arts.
I have one daughter named Hayley. She graduated in 2012, with honors, from Columbia College of Art in Chicago, Illinois, where she majored in Illustration. She is currently living in Chicago where she is pursuing a career in acting. My husband, Tom, is an IT guy currently working for Tantus as a Senior PC/Mac technician. In May he completed his 2nd degree in Cyber Security.
When I have free time, I can usually be found around a pool or at a beach reading or just relaxing. I love to travel, especially to Europe where I spent a few years singing. I also love working out and exercising on the dance floor.
I believe that all students have the interest, desire and capability to learn. As an educator, I believe it is my responsibility to create a nurturing learning environment that offers a variety of opportunities for students to have positive learning experiences. Most importantly, I believe everyone has a right to an education and we should never be measured only by how much we know, but also by the strength of our character.
I'm really looking forward to this school year and getting to know all of you.
